Delta 2023: The Game Of Politics And Multifaceted Voices Of Deception, gods and goddess.

Delta State

By Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe Esq

It is a well know fact that deception has become an integral part of political games in Nigeria, and indeed Africa continent. It will led good men to hell and saints into the lake of fire. God cannot be mocked. Whatsoever a man sow he shall surely reap.

But do not be worried by sponsored propaganda stories and articles of loyalty to the gods and goddesses, either of the sea or of the Atlantic Ocean, for the good Lord Jesus that we serve is in the business of setting the captives free and paying the debt of the bond woman.

The Urhobo ethnic nationality can never be used and dumped, cannot be a pawn of any shaped or size. Urhobos are very patient and sometimes they appear uncoordinated but can be very resilient, dogged and results oriented whenever the need arises. They are humble to a fault but at the same time can be very stubborn when the ships are down.

Don’t listen to PR voices and don’t give in to reckless political permutations that portrays governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, as a fetish politician who may have sworn before any deity in order to achieve his political ambition in 2015, NEVER. His landslide victory was divine, a victory well deserved and devoid of juju or vudu sentiments or colouration.

Okowa is a genuine christian and have demonstrated it from the beginning of his tenure in 2015 till date, and still counting. Political games and strategies are real and political power is never gotten cheaply, which is why there is bound to be alliances and teamwork in the electioneering process.

Delta Central waited for 16 years to begin another circle of power sharing in Delta State, and not even loyalty to any deity can take 2023 from the senatorial district. The three senatorial districts must remain as one, and be their brother’s keeper. Political coup in 2023 against one and another must be discouraged for us to sustain oneness, peace, unity in diversity.

Disregard any material or satanic piece trending on social media and in public domain, trying to link the governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, to promises or oath taken before certain deities in respect of 2023 governorship race. This cannot be the correct position and will never be.

The governor is known and seen to have given thanks to God Almighty for all his victories, peace and good governance in Delta State. The alleged dollars traded in 2015 if anything to go by cannot be compared to the unity, peace and political stability in the state, especially the growth and stability of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Delta South handed power to Delta North in 2015, for 8 years, and governor Okowa being an astute politician, a man with good conscience and equity, may not be favourably disposed to handing over power to Delta South in 2023. It will be a clear case of political complication that may led to prolonged political conflicts, if you permit me to use that foreseeable finality.

The field is open to all aspirants, and at the end of the gubernatorial party primaries we shall know whether or not these multifaceted voices of deities will have their way, or that God, will determine who becomes Okowa’s successor.

I am optimistic beyond reasonable doubts that Delta Central will be united and shall collaborate with the two other senatorial districts to have it in 2023, but we do not know at the moment who amongst the aspirants in Urhobo nation will fly the PDP governorship ticket in 2023.

Communication strategists of deities and vudu, should let Okowa be. He is a genuine christian and the apple of God’s eye, not of the gods, goddess or deities.

DElTA 2023: Urhobo Must Hold Together

By Udueme Onovughe

The Delta Central for 2023 lobby group has maintained that the three aspirants that emerged from its screening process is its final presentation for the Peoples Democratic Party primaries ahead of the Delta Governorship election in 2023.

The Pruning/Screening Committee which began the trimming from 13 to five, submitted its final report last Sunday, recommending Olorogun David Edevbie, Barr Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. At the same time, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo and Chief James Augoye were dropped.

Some of those screened out now insist they will participate in the PDP primaries despite the report, claiming the process violated their political rights. However, Deltans are questioning the integrity in turning around to criticise the process only when they did not scale the final hurdle.

A prominent Delta Central PDP chieftain explained that while the idea of pruning was in heeding the advice of party leaders, the process was explained to all the aspirants and they signed up and submitted to it without coercion.

“It is ridiculous that any of them would reject the outcome. The process was explained to all, they ratified the criteria, signed and submitted themselves for the screening. They agreed to maintain mutual friendship and work together before, during, and after the screening, into the primaries and the election proper, to ensure the emergence of a Delta Central candidate as the Governor.

“The aspirants had a forum. They first met at Ughelli, and those in attendance signed. At their next meeting in Sapele, Augoye and some others signed before they proceeded to Sapele Athletic Club for the first screening on November 21, at which some of them advanced into the top first five. Curiously, they did not complain then. It is unfair. Is it because they did not make the final list? I think they should join hands with those selected because they are all still members of one family and they still have their place in the political environment.”

Urhobo Map

During the week, the Chairman of the Delta Central lobby group, Chief Ighoyota Amori, said there is no going back on the selection.

“From Delta Central, these are the three aspirants we have chosen. We have examined, we have put all parameters into consideration and these three people meet our minimum requirements to become Governor of Delta. This is our final position,” he declared.

“We are re-emphasising, all those who have been supporting A, B, C or D should now key into and collapse all their support into the structure of Olorogun David Edevbie, Barr Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. That is the way we have structured it. That is the way they have been recommended and the way we adopted them. One of them will definitely become Governor of the state. Key into anyone. I don’t have any special person. The three aspirants are the aspirants of DC-23, and we so recommend.”

That seems fair enough just as the criteria were fair.

“First of all, we subjected all aspirants to the Nigeria constitution and the party constitution. They all met the requirement. Then we took other considerations. They are not political neophytes. If you look at the three names, they have been there from the very beginning.

“You don’t expect somebody who is just coming and says he wants to become Governor, but I know there is a place in history for them. It is not that they were not chosen because they were not qualified but, somehow, in any examination, somebody must come first, second and third. Fourth, fifth and sixth are not within our plan; hence we did the screening to choose 1,2,3. Even if two people have first-class, there must be a first within the class.”

A PDP Chieftain who was close to the process said though David Edevbie scored the highest in each of the criteria, Oborevwori was a distant second while Senator Aguariavwodo scored unimpressive marks in all categories.

“Edevbie scored distinction in development strategy, capability, Pan-Delta disposition, integrity, credibility, acceptance and accessibility. That cannot be surprising given his background and experiences working with almost all the Governors, at the Presidency and his professional career in the private sector. But Sheriff (Oborevwori) was on his heels on integrity.

“Aguariavwodo scored the lowest in Pan-Delta disposition, and that might not be unconnected with his attempt to take over from Ibori in 2007, not minding that they are both Urhobos. He also had issues with his development strategy and preparedness, integrity and acceptance, in which he also scored very low. Gbagi, who came third behind Sheriff, had serious issues with integrity where he scored the lowest.”

It is trite to say the Urhobos should stand firm with DC-23. The group organised themselves and took the gauntlet to transverse the state to ensure the understanding of various other parts for power rotation to restart from Delta Central rather than on the basis of ethnic groups, the complexity of which will throw up unending squabbles.

Again, no one can challenge the personality and integrity of any of the screening committee members who assessed the aspirants. They were treated to the same questions and there is no way they would all have emerged with equal scores.

It has also always been said that in as much as we agree on rotation, the zones must endeavour to present their best hands.

Having adhered to all these and having come this far, the DC-23 cannot now become villains simply for advancing a process to ensure the actualisation of a Governor from Delta Central which will also help to maintain order in the rotation process across the state.

It is more so when it was advised by the Governor and the aspirants submitted to and ratified the criteria.

Olorogun John Nani

F&A DESOPADEC, the position he still occupies till date.

The much talked about restoration of the “Ethiope West State Constituency 1” recently approved by the Nigerian Senate is one of the many legacy footprints of Hon John Nani when he was a member of the State assembly.

As a Commissioner for environment, he was named Workaholic Commissioner by the Governor and was later echoed by the Nigerian Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo during his visit to the State to assess the level of environmental impacts of the State government. That was due to his (JON) laudable initiatives in the ministry, and working tirelessly to making sure his ministry contributed its quota maximally to the #SMARTAGENDA, #STRONGERDELTA and #PROPSERITY4ALLDELTANS which are the initiative of the governor.

DC-23, DELTA GOVERNORSHIP AND SUNDRY MATTERS

MSD

The Movement for a Stronger Delta is quite amazed that despite the very clear, succinct, and unequivocal clarification by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa (Ekwueme), that the PDP Guber Primaries, to elect his successor and the next flagbearer of the party in the 2023 governorship election, will be free, fair and transparent, some people are still raking up the silly hallucination that the Governor should hand over power to them without any contest at all.

In other words, if they had their way, the PDP should just embark on the brazen undemocratic impunity of blocking every other individual from other ethnic groups in the State, from contesting the Governorship Primary, except only individuals from their own ethnic group.

In fact, we have heard from very impeccable sources, that there’s a particular political party in the State, which has perfected and concluded plans to ensure that only one man will contest and win its guber primaries and every other individual, from other ethnic groups, will be blocked and shut out from contesting the primary election. Although we cannot confirm this very disturbing undemocratic act of brazen impunity and onslaught on the political process, which this political party is alleged to be plotting for the sake of one man, who wants to play God, the signs are very ominous and dangerous for our politics and these are the same people that are already setting the agenda and arranging the components for likely violence, which is synonymous with the party, in 2023.

Unfortunately for these ethnic jingoists who have been carrying on as if something was stolen from them which they must get back at all cost, the guidelines for the political and electoral processes are well spelt out both in the Nigerian constitution as amended, the electoral laws, and the practice guidelines and rulebook guiding every election. Any action carried out against the stipulated rules will be nothing short of a civilian coup d’etat against democracy.

This is why we must applaud and doff our hats to the leaders and entire membership of the DC-23 for embarking on and successfully concluding the process they initiated, ostensibly to organize, coordinate, sanitize and set the compass for a robust, transparent, and properly articulated agenda, by setting up a contest, featuring their best options in a screening process amongst and between those who would so desire to throw their hats into the Guber contest.

The point must be made clear that the DC-23, is a PDP political pressure group, clearly setting its own specific agenda, within the guidelines of its party’s constitution, and it has done the wise thing by submitting a list of three distinguished Deltans as their choice candidates, going into the Guber primaries of the party.

It is not a political party and therefore must be very much aware that whatever it has done, is not binding on the party, as some interested and dissatisfied parties are claiming.

Of course in every contest, somebody will win and somebody will lose and this is exactly what has happened with the DC-23 final list, but since their action is predominantly a reflection of their own choices as a pressure group, even those who did not make the top three have expressed their displeasure with the result and have since proceeded to state categorically that they are still in the race and will exercise their right to contest the election and continue with their media visibility strategy.

Power comes from God and the voice of the people is the voice of God. Democracy is a game of numbers and in a plural democracy like ours, as indeed every democratic process, the candidate with the highest number of legitimately declared or judicially certified votes, wins the particular election, whether it is a primary election or the substantive election for constitutionally recognized elected offices.

The fact that DC-23 has shortlisted three outstanding individuals as their preferred choices for the 2023 PDP Governorship primary, does not in anyway foreclose the ambitions of others who feel they are better qualified and can spring a genuine surprise or two at the primaries.

That’s the beauty of democracy; anyone who’s brave enough to chest out in the contest, always has a chance…

Again, the decision of DC-23 to settle for three out of the multiple aspirants who initially keyed into the process, including those who eventually opted out mid-way, claiming suspicious intentions on the part of the umpires, does not and cannot even stop other political parties from selecting and supporting candidates from DC-23’s Senatorial zone for the general elections. That too is another beautiful thing about democracy.

With Governor Ifeanyi Okowa stating categorically that the PDP Primaries will be free, fair, and transparent, the clarion call and the signal bell has been sounded to all interested aspirants with capacity, including the distinguished three who came out tops from DC-23 screening, to now be on their best behaviours, put on their brightest personalities for a charm offensive, both in the media and in their personal interactions with some selected people, and then upgrade their powers of persuasion by any and every legitimate means possible, to try and get the most votes when the primaries come around.

Interestingly, while the Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier announced that the 2023 general elections will hold on February 18, 2023, and it will release the election timetable after the November 2021 Anambra State Guber election, the electoral umpire has now changed its tone by declaring that it will now release the 2023 election Time Table and Guidelines, only after President Mohammadu Buhari must have assented to the Electoral Bill and signed it into law.

However, President Buhari declined to sign the bill into law when it was forwarded to him by the National Assembly, but rather returned it to NASS, asking that they amend the clause dealing with the mode of primaries for political parties. Both chambers of NASS have now amended the contentious section to include Direct, Indirect, and Consensus methods for political party primaries and we once again wait with bated breath, if the President will finally assent to the bill or not, especially now that his request has been accommodated.

What it all boils down to however is that in the interregnum, Delta Guber aspirants and hopefuls now have ample time to cast their nets across the delegates’ sea and try to bait in as many as possible for themselves. Even amongst the three DC-23 favoured individuals, only one can win to emerge as the ticket bearer under the Umbrella platform, and we are glad that even the leaders of DC-23 have called on Deltans to support any amongst their choice, when the primaries day arrives.

The real politicians who know what politicking is all about, are quite busy underground, reaching out, negotiating, building structures and setting up bridges across all interest groups and socio/political as well as cultural and traditional divides for themselves or their favoured candidates.

That is what real politics is all about, and not looking for cheap endorsement through the back door and trying to blackmail and threaten anybody who tells them the political truth about elections.

Of course, there will be the usual spoilers and yarn masters trying to put a misleading twist or spin imaginary, hallucinatory tales and conjectures on the actions and activities of the major protagonists, either in an attempt to cause disaffection within their ranks or promote the propaganda of some opposing individuals or interest groups, but we are quite confident that the top leaders will only play the politics of the highest integrity with strategic acumen and brinkmanship, according each other mutual respect and accommodation for personal and collective interests.

The expectation is that when the dust finally settles after a keenly contested, passionate but rancour and acrimony free primaries, those who will win would’ve won and those who put up a good fight would embrace the winners and quickly join forces together to deliver the party to another resounding victory in the main elections because, with victory, everyone is a winner all round.

That, after all, is the SIMPLE Agenda for 2023.
