Boundary Dispute: Okowa urges warring communities to embrace peace

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has called on communities embroiled in boundary dispute, which has led to crises and loss of lives to embrace peace to pave way for meaningful development.

Okowa made the call on Saturday at the funeral of late Professor Abednego Ekoko at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Uzere in Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.

He said that no land was worth the life of any individual and urged Isoko people to embrace peace in honour of late Ekoko who was an accomplished boundary scholar.

According to him, all Isoko people can be united if you hold on to God and extend love and friendship among yourselves.

Okowa said that Ekoko contributed immensely to the peaceful resolution of crises in many communities and therefore charge his people to end strife and tread the path of peace in memory of the deceased peacemaker.

The governor recalled that Ekoko played vital role in the resolution of Aladja-Ogbe-Ijoh crisis and other boundary issues in the state and across the country when he served as National Commissioner, National Boundaries Commission.

He said “on behalf of my family and the government and people of Delta, I extend my condolences to the Ekoko family of Uzere on the passing of our father, brother and friend.

“We thank God for what is happening today on the day a peaceful man is being laid to rest. Professor Ekoko achieved all that he truly needed to achieve and today we are celebrating his life of great accomplishments.

“In everything he found himself doing he excelled and he taught my wife at the postgraduate level and has impacted directly on my family.

“In the community, he rose to achieve the highest honour in the land and beyond serving God, he served Nigeria at our national governance and through various appointments in the state.

“He was a special appointee of our state government as Executive Assistant (Boundary Matters).

“He was indeed a boundary scholar and I can attest to the fact that he contributed immensely to the peace we have in Aladja-Ogbe-Ijoh today.

“As Isoko people, let us honour Ekoko at his death by embracing peace. There are a lot of boundary disputes and communal crises in Isoko which ought not to be.

“In honour of the death of a boundary scholar that worked for peace in many communities, let us stop fighting and live peacefully.”

He counselled the people to eschew bitterness, especially over land matters, saying “when you fight because of land and for the sake of land destroy lives, those lives you destroyed you cannot recreate them when you settle.

“No land is worth the life of anyone and as leaders and elders, we ought to handover things that will connote peace and development and not crisis.

“I hope that the sermon spoken to us today will touch our lives for a change in honour of the late Ekoko.”

Okowa urged the leadership of Isoko Development Union and the Christian community to organise a collective prayer to rededicate Isokoland to God.

“It is a time for us to examine our faith, a time for self-introspection and reconciliation, and we must realise that it’s only in love the Isoko nation can be built to a greater nation.

“The charge from Christ is for us to reexamine ourselves and it is not too late to start,” he added.

Earlier in his sermon, Bishop of Oleh Diocese (Anglican Communion), Rt. Rev. John Aruakpor, said that late Professor Ekoko was a man who worked for peace across the country.

He described him as a man who was an addicted singer and worshipper of God, adding that his death was a great loss to christendom.

The bishop said that Ekoko worshipped God even through pains and sickness.

He urged Christians to live in peace and shun the spirit of bitterness and acrimony which had pervaded the land in recent years.

“As politicians, it is only when we are united that we can attract dividends of democracy to our land,” he said.

The service which featured prayers for the cleansing of Isoko land, attracted numerous dignitaries from the academia and was also attended by Senator James Manager, Senator Stella Omu; former Minister of Works, Chief Mike Onolememen and Mr Victor Nwokolo of the House of Representatives among others.

Delta 2023: The Game Of Politics And Multifaceted Voices Of Deception, gods and goddess.

Delta State

By Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe Esq

It is a well know fact that deception has become an integral part of political games in Nigeria, and indeed Africa continent. It will led good men to hell and saints into the lake of fire. God cannot be mocked. Whatsoever a man sow he shall surely reap.

But do not be worried by sponsored propaganda stories and articles of loyalty to the gods and goddesses, either of the sea or of the Atlantic Ocean, for the good Lord Jesus that we serve is in the business of setting the captives free and paying the debt of the bond woman.

The Urhobo ethnic nationality can never be used and dumped, cannot be a pawn of any shaped or size. Urhobos are very patient and sometimes they appear uncoordinated but can be very resilient, dogged and results oriented whenever the need arises. They are humble to a fault but at the same time can be very stubborn when the ships are down.

Don’t listen to PR voices and don’t give in to reckless political permutations that portrays governor Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, as a fetish politician who may have sworn before any deity in order to achieve his political ambition in 2015, NEVER. His landslide victory was divine, a victory well deserved and devoid of juju or vudu sentiments or colouration.

Okowa is a genuine christian and have demonstrated it from the beginning of his tenure in 2015 till date, and still counting. Political games and strategies are real and political power is never gotten cheaply, which is why there is bound to be alliances and teamwork in the electioneering process.

Delta Central waited for 16 years to begin another circle of power sharing in Delta State, and not even loyalty to any deity can take 2023 from the senatorial district. The three senatorial districts must remain as one, and be their brother’s keeper. Political coup in 2023 against one and another must be discouraged for us to sustain oneness, peace, unity in diversity.

Disregard any material or satanic piece trending on social media and in public domain, trying to link the governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, to promises or oath taken before certain deities in respect of 2023 governorship race. This cannot be the correct position and will never be.

The governor is known and seen to have given thanks to God Almighty for all his victories, peace and good governance in Delta State. The alleged dollars traded in 2015 if anything to go by cannot be compared to the unity, peace and political stability in the state, especially the growth and stability of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Delta South handed power to Delta North in 2015, for 8 years, and governor Okowa being an astute politician, a man with good conscience and equity, may not be favourably disposed to handing over power to Delta South in 2023. It will be a clear case of political complication that may led to prolonged political conflicts, if you permit me to use that foreseeable finality.

The field is open to all aspirants, and at the end of the gubernatorial party primaries we shall know whether or not these multifaceted voices of deities will have their way, or that God, will determine who becomes Okowa’s successor.

I am optimistic beyond reasonable doubts that Delta Central will be united and shall collaborate with the two other senatorial districts to have it in 2023, but we do not know at the moment who amongst the aspirants in Urhobo nation will fly the PDP governorship ticket in 2023.

Communication strategists of deities and vudu, should let Okowa be. He is a genuine christian and the apple of God’s eye, not of the gods, goddess or deities.

DElTA 2023: Urhobo Must Hold Together

By Udueme Onovughe

The Delta Central for 2023 lobby group has maintained that the three aspirants that emerged from its screening process is its final presentation for the Peoples Democratic Party primaries ahead of the Delta Governorship election in 2023.

The Pruning/Screening Committee which began the trimming from 13 to five, submitted its final report last Sunday, recommending Olorogun David Edevbie, Barr Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. At the same time, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo and Chief James Augoye were dropped.

Some of those screened out now insist they will participate in the PDP primaries despite the report, claiming the process violated their political rights. However, Deltans are questioning the integrity in turning around to criticise the process only when they did not scale the final hurdle.

A prominent Delta Central PDP chieftain explained that while the idea of pruning was in heeding the advice of party leaders, the process was explained to all the aspirants and they signed up and submitted to it without coercion.

“It is ridiculous that any of them would reject the outcome. The process was explained to all, they ratified the criteria, signed and submitted themselves for the screening. They agreed to maintain mutual friendship and work together before, during, and after the screening, into the primaries and the election proper, to ensure the emergence of a Delta Central candidate as the Governor.

“The aspirants had a forum. They first met at Ughelli, and those in attendance signed. At their next meeting in Sapele, Augoye and some others signed before they proceeded to Sapele Athletic Club for the first screening on November 21, at which some of them advanced into the top first five. Curiously, they did not complain then. It is unfair. Is it because they did not make the final list? I think they should join hands with those selected because they are all still members of one family and they still have their place in the political environment.”

Urhobo Map

During the week, the Chairman of the Delta Central lobby group, Chief Ighoyota Amori, said there is no going back on the selection.

“From Delta Central, these are the three aspirants we have chosen. We have examined, we have put all parameters into consideration and these three people meet our minimum requirements to become Governor of Delta. This is our final position,” he declared.

“We are re-emphasising, all those who have been supporting A, B, C or D should now key into and collapse all their support into the structure of Olorogun David Edevbie, Barr Chief Kenneth Gbagi and Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori. That is the way we have structured it. That is the way they have been recommended and the way we adopted them. One of them will definitely become Governor of the state. Key into anyone. I don’t have any special person. The three aspirants are the aspirants of DC-23, and we so recommend.”

That seems fair enough just as the criteria were fair.

“First of all, we subjected all aspirants to the Nigeria constitution and the party constitution. They all met the requirement. Then we took other considerations. They are not political neophytes. If you look at the three names, they have been there from the very beginning.

“You don’t expect somebody who is just coming and says he wants to become Governor, but I know there is a place in history for them. It is not that they were not chosen because they were not qualified but, somehow, in any examination, somebody must come first, second and third. Fourth, fifth and sixth are not within our plan; hence we did the screening to choose 1,2,3. Even if two people have first-class, there must be a first within the class.”

A PDP Chieftain who was close to the process said though David Edevbie scored the highest in each of the criteria, Oborevwori was a distant second while Senator Aguariavwodo scored unimpressive marks in all categories.

“Edevbie scored distinction in development strategy, capability, Pan-Delta disposition, integrity, credibility, acceptance and accessibility. That cannot be surprising given his background and experiences working with almost all the Governors, at the Presidency and his professional career in the private sector. But Sheriff (Oborevwori) was on his heels on integrity.

“Aguariavwodo scored the lowest in Pan-Delta disposition, and that might not be unconnected with his attempt to take over from Ibori in 2007, not minding that they are both Urhobos. He also had issues with his development strategy and preparedness, integrity and acceptance, in which he also scored very low. Gbagi, who came third behind Sheriff, had serious issues with integrity where he scored the lowest.”

It is trite to say the Urhobos should stand firm with DC-23. The group organised themselves and took the gauntlet to transverse the state to ensure the understanding of various other parts for power rotation to restart from Delta Central rather than on the basis of ethnic groups, the complexity of which will throw up unending squabbles.

Again, no one can challenge the personality and integrity of any of the screening committee members who assessed the aspirants. They were treated to the same questions and there is no way they would all have emerged with equal scores.

It has also always been said that in as much as we agree on rotation, the zones must endeavour to present their best hands.

Having adhered to all these and having come this far, the DC-23 cannot now become villains simply for advancing a process to ensure the actualisation of a Governor from Delta Central which will also help to maintain order in the rotation process across the state.

It is more so when it was advised by the Governor and the aspirants submitted to and ratified the criteria.
